    Featured Network: Katie's Network

Being older parents with only a few scattered close relatives, we were reassured to know that the LifeSPAN program would provide oversight and assistance for Katie's network into the future. The network get-togethers provide Katie with opportunities to develop relationships and gain social skills, which in turn will help her become more confident and self-sufficient. We see that as one of the goals attainable through Katie's LifeSPAN Network, and we already feel progress has been made in that area.
-- Dennis and Barbara Bednar, Lifetime Members

I think of my network as a circle of friends. I think our meetings are lots of fun and I always look forward to them. Sometimes we do arts and crafts, which is fun and we learn a lot. We also share food and recipes and we listen to music.

Mom, Dad, and I are looking at apartments. We found this one we liked best. So just a quick FYI, we're going to be moving to the apartment at "The Heights" on October 5th.
-- Katie, in her own words

    John's Story
By John Perkins, Facilitator for David's Network

Thanks for inviting me to introduce myself.

Here are some of the “public” details about me: I’m African American, born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, about 52 years ago. I graduated from Southern University Laboratory School in 1970 and finished Amherst College on schedule in 1974. Without a Masters Degree, I earned my Ph.D. in Organizational Change from Union Institute and University in 1998.

Here are some not-so-obvious details: I have a passion for all the forms of sharing we can adopt, adapt or invent. I got my first whiff of the joys of community while in college. I have never “outgrown” the delights on-campus living afforded. After college, I lived in a four-member community we called Club 684 in New York for 14 years before moving to Seattle in 1990. Since moving here, I helped to found the Northwest Intentional Communities Association. I see the network formed around every focus person as a special type of intentional community.

A network slowly grows stronger as people wake up to this chance to put their noblest values in action. I accept this invitation to help assemble a heart-based community to last the focus person’s lifetime.

    Wills & Estates Workshop October 5, 12, 19
We want to inspire you to plan for the future. This three-part seminar is designed to assist 12 families in exploring the creation of a will and estate plan backed by a choice structure that supports the individual with a disability. To shape the workshops, a short survey will be sent to participants in advance.

    Topics include:
    • Wills and Estates
    • Financial Vehicles & Funding a Special Needs Trust
    • Guardianship Options & Ensuring Choice & Safety

The workshop is led by Matthew Wesley, Esq., Socius Law Group, and LifeSPAN board members.

Location: Bellefield Office Park Conference Center, 1150 114th Ave SE, Bellevue, 98004

Cost: $75 for the three-session series. Please register in advance by October 2.

Introduction to LifeSPAN - Oct 8, Nov 12
We invite you to attend a free one-hour session to talk about LifeSPAN and our approach to building relationships in the community. You will have an opportunity to speak with members of LifeSPAN who are excited about ensuring a good life for people with disabilities. You will also be able to get more information about membership in LifeSPAN, training workshops, and involvement in Networks and Facilitation.

Our next sessions are scheduled for Sunday October 8 from 4-5 pm and Sunday November 12 from 4-5 pm at Jackson Place Cohousing 800 Hiawatha Place S. Seattle, WA 98144, one block east of Rainier Ave, at Dearborn.

To help us with planning, please RSVP to Kathy (206) 522-3099 or email (kathy@lifespan-wa.org) if you're planning to come.

    Sponsor "A Good Life" Workshop
LifeSPAN would be delighted to bring our one-day "A Good Life" workshop to your community, organization, or business. The workshop is based on the book, A Good Life by Al Etmanski of PLAN, Canada, and introduces concrete steps to help families begin the process of planning a safe and secure future for their loved one with a disability.

There are several options to consider. Your organization can pay the presentation fee and provide complimentary registrations to as many of your employees, members, clients, or community as you like. Or you can charge a small fee to recoup your expenses. LifeSPAN can help you with promotional materials and handouts. The workshop we did for Snohomish DD last spring attracted over 60 participants.

    Testimonials:

This information helps me feel able to act and move forward with a task that can seem overwhelming!

Very beneficial -- a place to begin dialogue with my family/sister.

-- Participants at 2006 Snohomish Workshop
